How a course is structured
Controls and confidence
Clutch control, moving off and stopping, steering and mirrors, on quiet residential roads until it feels automatic.
Traffic systems
Junctions, roundabouts, crossroads and lane discipline — the bulk of your course, worked through in a deliberate order.
Manoeuvres
Bay parking, parallel parking, pulling up on the right and reversing, practised in real locations rather than empty car parks.
Independent driving
Following signs and sat-nav directions without prompting, on the roads your examiner is likely to use.
Test standard
Mock tests, honest debriefs and targeted work on whatever is still costing you marks.
What to expect in a lesson
Every lesson starts with a short recap: what went well last time, what you want to work on, and a clear goal for the hour. That takes two minutes and it doubles the value of the session, because you know exactly what success looks like before the car moves.
During the drive David coaches rather than commands. Instead of being told what to do at every junction, you'll be asked what you can see, what you're planning and why — the DVSA's Client-Centred Learning approach. It feels slower for the first couple of lessons and considerably faster after that, because you stop depending on prompts.
Lessons finish with an honest debrief and a specific target for next time. Most learners take one or two hours a week; two-hour sessions tend to produce faster progress per pound once you're past the very early stages.
Pick-up and drop-off can be from home, work, school or college anywhere in the covered area.
