Nervous driver coaching

No shouting. No rush. No judgement.

For anyone who has been putting this off — first-time learners in their thirties, forties and beyond, drivers who've had a bad experience, and licence holders who stopped driving years ago.

How the lessons are different

Anxiety behind the wheel is almost always about workload. When too much is happening at once and you don't yet have a system for filtering it, the brain treats the whole road as one giant threat. The answer isn't willpower or 'just relaxing' — it's reducing the workload until it's manageable, then adding it back one layer at a time.

In practice that means starting somewhere genuinely quiet, agreeing exactly what will and won't happen in the lesson, and never being surprised into something you weren't ready for. If a roundabout isn't on the plan for today, it isn't happening today.

David's coaching style suits this well. Questions rather than commands, honest feedback, and a complete absence of theatrics. Twenty years of roads policing means very little is going to rattle him, and that steadiness transfers.

Progress is tracked openly so you can see it. Nervous drivers often underestimate how much they've improved, and having last month's goals written down is a surprisingly powerful thing.

If a full hour feels like too much to begin with, say so when you call and something shorter can be arranged for the first session.

Common worries — answered

I'm too old to start.

David regularly teaches learners in their forties, fifties and sixties. Adult learners tend to be more consistent and better at self-assessment than teenagers.

I failed twice and lost my nerve.

Very common, and very fixable. We start by finding out exactly what went wrong rather than just doing more hours.

I panic on roundabouts.

Then we break roundabouts into approach, observation, choice and exit, and practise each part separately before joining them up.

I haven't driven in ten years.

Refresher lessons are available for full licence holders — no L plates on the roof if you'd rather not.
